The effect is larger than the descriptive\nthresholds in the plan. This is evidence for generalization of the selected\ncontrast, not proof that the units encode the concept of animalhood.\n\n## Permutation reality check\n\nThe null shuffled the 40/40 localizer labels 500 times. Every shuffle repeated\nthe search over all 179,712 units and retained its maximum positive d.\n\n- Observed maximum d: `4.956467`\n- 95th percentile of shuffled maxima: `1.160350`\n- Empirical p-value: `0.001996` (`(1 + 0) / 501`)\n\nThe observed maximum is far above the null distribution in this run. This\naddresses the specific maximum-search question under the label-shuffle null;\nit is not a substitute for a broader model, vocabulary, or category control.\n\n## Interpretation boundaries\n\nSafe description:\n\n> The strongest selected units showed animal-versus-tool selectivity on the\n> localizer vocabulary and retained positive selectivity on unseen words.\n\nDo not call `L12/U646` an \u201canimal neuron.\u201d The two categories can differ in\nanimacy, living versus manufactured status, agency, lexical frequency, length,\ntoken statistics, or other uncontrolled properties. A one-token filter and a\nshared carrier sentence remove some measurement ambiguity, but they do not\nremove semantic or lexical confounds.\n\nThe result looks like both a strong selected-unit signal and a broad localizer\nsignal: many units exceed d > 1 on the discovery vocabulary. That does not by\nitself distinguish sparse localized coding from a distributed representation.\n\n## Reusable report language\n\nShort result statement:\n\n> In pretrained Gemma 3 1B, we searched 179,712 gated MLP intermediate units\n> using 80 animal/tool localizer words. The 20 highest animal-selective units\n> were frozen before evaluation on 40 held-out words. All 20 retained positive\n> held-out d values, with a median d of 3.46. The observed maximum localizer d\n> was 4.96, compared with a 500-shuffle null 95th percentile of 1.16 and an\n> empirical maximum-statistic p-value of 0.002.\n\nRequired qualification:\n\n> This is a two-category lexical contrast in one pretrained model. The existing `localizer_utils.py` loader and pre-down hook\nare reused.\n\n## Stimulus construction\n\nThe primary taxonomy has eight balanced categories: animals, humans, plants,\nfoods, vehicles, tools, household objects, and natural non-living entities.\n`data/experiment_002/category_properties.csv` records broad candidate\nproperties. The `0.5` entries for foods mean \u201cvaried/uncertain\u201d and are not\ntreated as binary psychological labels.\n\nThe candidate pass used the exact Experiment 1 tokenizer and carrier. The final primary table\nuses fresh single-token replacements and does not include cross-category word\nduplicates. Plants are the highest category for five frozen units, and foods are highest for one. This is evidence of a shared animal-related signal with heterogeneous secondary structure.\n- Binary property results are consistent across the frozen units for living, natural, and manufactured contrasts. Mobile responses are mixed. Animate and agentive are identical by construction, so they are not independent findings.\n- The compact interpretation and limitations are recorded in `artifacts/experiment_002/results/summary.md`; the word-level inspection is recorded in `artifacts/experiment_002/results/inspection_notes.md`.\n\n### Experiment 2 visual and demo verification\n\n- Static figure command: `uv run python scripts/experiment_002/make_static_figures.py`.\n- The run produced PNG and SVG versions of the required top-unit tuning chart, all-unit tuning heatmap, individual-word response chart, and an additional property-contrast heatmap under `artifacts/experiment_002/figures/`.\n- Demo export command: `uv run python scripts/experiment_002/export_demo_data.py`. It produced `demo/data/experiment_002.json` with frozen units, raw and standardized category summaries, word-level responses, pairwise contrasts, property contrasts, similarity values, and heatmap data.\n- Browser QA used the local demo at `http://localhost:8000/demo/`. The new Localize/Characterize switch worked. Characterize mode loaded the frozen unit selector, raw/standardized toggle, compare-unit selector, tuning chart, category drilldown, unit gallery, heatmap, property chart, and similarity chart.\n- QA selected `L12/U1000`, toggled raw and standardized views, and selected the plants category. The drilldown changed from the animal list to the 40 plant words sorted by the selected response. This verified that chart selection updates the word-level view.\n- The word-comparison scatter plot reuses the 320 shared Experiment 2 words. It colors points by category, adds a same-response diagonal, reports word-level Pearson correlation and mean absolute difference, and lists the eight largest disagreements.\n- Scatter QA changed the comparison from `L17/U348` to `L13/U5008`; the displayed correlation changed from `0.89` to `0.42` and mean absolute difference from `0.29` to `0.85`. Clicking the `candy` disagreement changed the existing category drilldown to foods for `L12/U646`.\n- Code checks passed: `uv run ruff check scripts/experiment_002` and `node --check demo/app.js`.\n- Final integrity check passed: all 320 stimulus rows are unique and single-token at target index 5; the frozen unit list matches the Experiment 1 top-20 source; the activation tensor is finite; all analysis tables contain finite numeric values; all 8 figure files exist; and the exported demo contains 20 units, 8 categories, and 6,400 word responses.\n- Visual QA found no title overlap in the static figures, and the browser reported no console errors after the interactive drilldown fix.\n",
